How To Get Real Freedom

In this “Information and Media Age,” there is everything we could possibly want at our fingertips. You want to buy a book, the latest athletic shoes, a new couch? Just open a screen, click on a button and you have it in a matter of hours or days; without ever leaving your house. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. But it can create a lack of self-sacrifice that opens us up to a type of bondage. Bondage to things, a slave to instant gratification, and an “I-want-it-now” kind of mentality. A feeling of “I work hard; I should have what I want.” You may have even heard people say, “It’s a free country, you should live how you want. It’s your life…so live it, do what you want!” But is that true? Are we free to do whatever makes us feel good?

The Bible is clear, that to die to self is the only way to live for Christ. It sounds like a contradiction, doesn’t it? But, in reality, freedom comes when we give up our rights to ourselves and surrender to a greater plan…God’s plan. History books are filled with the stories and examples of people who sacrificed everything they owned, even their lives, to be free. They had a choice; stay where they were, under oppression and tyranny, or make a change in the hopes of finding freedom. We only make a change when we make a choice. The choice for freedom comes when we release our desire to stay where we are.

What are you seeking freedom from? Is it bondage to an addiction? Is there a sin you’re unwilling to acknowledge? Is your spiritual life in a rut that you can’t seem to get out of? The Bible tells us simply, that true freedom is found in Christ. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1, NIV). No matter what the bondage is…the slavery to a sin or a habit that seems to drag you backwards, the words someone spoke over you and you can’t shake…let go of that bondage, that sin, whatever it is; and you will see a freedom you never knew possible. “For I can do everything through Christ, Who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NLT).

Often, freedom is measured according to the level of bondage you have experienced. Where do you fall on the freedom scale? True freedom is only found in a relationship with Jesus. When you know Him, “then you will know The Truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, NIV). Real truth. Real freedom.
